The Requirements

To be a good fit for this opportunity you should have:
  • A high school education or equivalency (GED).
  • At least two years of experience as a welder in a production environment, preferably with hollow metal products.
  • Proficiency in MIG welding and general shop experience.
  • The ability to interpret shop drawings and hardware templates.
  • The ability to pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Certified welder by CWI, or technology school graduate with a concentration in welding is a plus.
In general you will work five days per week, Monday through Friday. Most of the team works from 7 AM to 3 PM, but there is a little flexibility there. There also will be potential for overtime hours during the week and on Saturdays. We make every effort to offer the Saturday work as voluntary.

The Role

The Northwest Service Center in Kent assembles and modifies hollow metal doors and frames, and also has a shipping and receiving function. You will report to the Operations Supervisor and take direction from a Lead Welder. We perform all MIG welding here.

Your activities will include:
  • Maintaining the schedule set by the Operations Supervisor. Quick question for you - click here
  • Distributing work orders to shop personnel.
  • Ensuring materials and tools are in place and ready, to avoid down time.
  • Ensuring employees successfully accomplish their work correctly and efficiently.
  • Motivating the Welders and helping them learn new skills as necessary.
  • Acting as "first contact" for the Welders for all shop personnel questions regarding project work, schedules, problems, safety and defective equipment.
  • Participating in the selection of new Welders as necessary.
  • Ensuring Welders are trained appropriately regarding safety as well as specific job activities.
  • Keeping the Operations Supervisor aware of any issues that may impact the schedule.
  • Ensuring the Weld Shop is opened and closed appropriately each day.
  • Ensuring the Welders follow all safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Ensuring all equipment is working properly and safely, and ensuring unsafe or non-working equipment is taken out of service and repaired.
  • Making equipment and tool suggestions to improve shop efficiency.

To excel in this role you will have a strong sense of "ownership" for the Welding team's performance. If there are problems you will work to resolve them within the team. At the same time, you should exercise good judgment in knowing when to bring a problem to the attention of the Operations Supervisor.

Your leadership skills should focus on motivating the team and maintaining their sense of pride in delivering quality work, on time, day after day. We'll look to you to promote teamwork and a shared sense of accountability, but you also may need to be assertive from time to time.

Safety is a primary concern and, in addition to monitoring equipment and processes, you should promote safety as an integral part of a professional welder's skillset.
